Sixth Form Debate Society

We are thrilled to highlight the remarkable achievements of our inaugural Sixth Form Debate Club, led by Miss Khan. Launched this academic year, our dedicated members recently participated in the prestigious Cambridge Schools Debating Competition at the historic Cambridge Union alongside Miss Khan, Miss Khabir, and Mr Brady. This event provided an exceptional opportunity for our students to engage in thoughtful discussions and demonstrate their outstanding debating skills.
More than just a competition, this experience has significantly boosted our students' confidence and commitment to enhancing their oracy and articulation skills. Participating in debates fosters essential qualities, encouraging students to embrace and navigate various viewpoints and construct well-structured, compelling arguments vital for their development as future leaders.
Establishing our first Sixth Form Debate Club is a significant milestone for our community. It inspires students to aim high and recognise their potential, empowering them to explore opportunities they might not have otherwise considered. Watching our students compete against more privileged and private school participants attests to their hard work and dedication. Their determination reinforces that every student has the right to thrive in esteemed academic environments like Cambridge, encouraging them to take pride in their identity and backgrounds. Maya Angelou wisely said, "If you don't know where you've come from, you don't know where you're going."
The trip was also memorable as our students explored the iconic grounds of Cambridge, including the Cambridge Union, a venue rich in historical debates and important conversations. During this special occasion, those fasting broke their fast with fellow students from Stockwood, showcasing the spirit of camaraderie that defines our Debate Club. We are immensely proud of our teams: The Orchid, featuring Frankie and Afra, who secured second place in their first round after a closely contested debate, and The Undaunted, with Aliyu and Ramneek, who also earned second place in their respective round.
Additionally, our other teams included The Veritas, composed of Chidima and Alvira and The Great Debaters, Raziya and Elijah. The Great Debaters came first in their final round. These achievements speak volumes about their determination and hard work, serving as an inspiration to all of us. Looking ahead, we are eager to nurture the growth of Stockwood's debating culture and participate in future competitions. The enthusiasm from many students aspiring to participate again next year is incredibly encouraging. Our students' presence at prestigious institutions like Cambridge should be the norm, not the exception.
This experience perfectly encapsulated the spirit of "Carpe Diem"—seizing the day—and our students embraced this wholeheartedly. They showcased their articulate, tenacious, and persuasive selves while demonstrating exceptional support for one another and respect for other competitors, embodying true sportsmanship.
Let us carry this momentum forward as we work together to strengthen our debate culture. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." Together, we are committed to cultivating a bright future for all our students, reflecting our core values of compassion, excellence, and responsibility. These principles unite us in our mission to nurture every student's potential.
